If there is one problem I have with modern sensibilities, it is the tendency to make virtues out of vices.  Don’t get me wrong, I think that even impatience can be a good thing if it is impatience for justice or liberty, but we seem to have gotten the sense that a vice like greed is actually a good thing because there can be positive consequences.  And sure we like to tell ourselves that Gordon Gecko was the villain, but there are far too many who see him as a hero or an anti-hero at least.  We want to believe, like Ayn Rand, that it is only from our natural human impulses toward self-preservation that we can truly be free and prosperous, but I have a simple rebuttal.  Don’t be such a dick.

I don’t know why, but the simple quality of compassion is an all but forgotten virtue these…
